Over the centuries Turriff grew in size and developed as
an important market a service centre for the farming community.
Turriff became known in 1913 throughout Great Britain when,
Robert Paterson, a local farmer protested against the National
Health Act by withholding payment of National Insurance
contributions for his employees. One of his cows was taken
into legal custody by the Sheriff Officers who tried to
auction it to cover the National Insurance payments that
Mr Paterson owed. A riot began and the Sheriff Officers
were chased out of town. It was later bought at an auction
by local farmers who presented it back to Mr Paterson after
a procession through the streets of Turriff, the cow was
then known as the "Turra Coo".
