Keith
Keith
is on the main A96 road between Aberdeen and Inverness.
The history of Keith can be traced back around 700 AD when
St Maelrubha of Applecross converted its inhabitants to
Christianity. Keith's connection with the Church continued
when the town was granted to Kinloss Abbey by King William
the Lion Heart. From as far back as the 12th century people
travelled from all over Scotland to congregate for a week
trading their livestock and goods at the Keith Agricultural
Show. Keith was formerly in the old county of Banffshire,
it sits in a rich seam of farmland. Rebuilt by the Earl
of Seafield in 1750, to replace the old settlement straggling
along the banks of the River Isla. A place of interest to
Keith is The Auld Brig, the oldest remaining bridge in Banffshire
and one of the oldest in Scotland, built in 1609, a packhorse
bridge which once carried the main road north.
