Ellon,
"Eilean" meaning island in Gaelic is situated
on the River Ythan, on the A90, seventeen miles north of
Aberdeen and seventeen miles to the south of Peterhead.
It has a population of just over 9,000. Above; The river
runs through looking over the Ythan towards the centre of
town. The town's historical significance is based on its
situation at a ford on the River Ythan. It was the main
settlement of the Pictish province of Buchan before 400
BC. It began as a seat of justice for Comyn earldom of Buchan
but was burned in the harrying of Buchan in 1308 following
Robert The Bruce's defeat of the Comyns near Oldmeldrum.
The area around Ellon was once poor and infertile. In the
1970's it turned into a rich agricultural area. The town
expanded rapidly to accommodate the oil-related workforce.
